Daily Life on the two sides of the Channel…
How much do you know about the life of a French and English teenager?
We have interviewed Isabelle and Matthew to answer all  your questions.

At what time do you start and finish school?
Isabelle: Er ! I start school at eight o’clock and finish at five o’clock, except on Wednesday, when I finish at midday.
Matthew: I start at eight but I’m often late. I finish at half past three. I go to the rugby club three times a week from three thirty to five o’clock.
Isabelle: You are lucky to finish at half past three!

What do you study at school?
Isabelle: I like a lot of subjects. For example, Maths, French, music, “éducation civique”, Spanish and latin.
Matthew: I don’t like maths but I like sports. My favourite school subject is PE because it keeps me fit, plus I can chat up the girls.

At dinner, are you allowed to help yourself or do you eat at the table ?
Matthew: I help myself to the fridge but when guests are around I have dinner at the table.
Isabelle: I don’t like helping myself from the fridge but I enjoy family conversations around the table so I eat at the table.
Matthew: Are you daddy’s little girl?
Isabelle: Stop it! It’s not polite to take food out of the fridge without permission.

How often do you go to fast food restaurants?
Isabelle: Yuk! I am on a healthy diet. I don’t like going to fast food restaurants.
Matthew: What? You are not going to fast food restaurants! You are out of your mind ! I go to fast food restaurants twice a month. Yummy!

At what time do you have to go home in the evening ?
Isabelle: I sometimes go out until nine o’clock but I always ask for permission.
Matthew: Nine o’clock? I go out until ten o’clock but I don’t always ask for permission.
Isabelle: My goodness! You are not punished?
Matthew: Yes, I am punished. I am grounded for one week but it doesn’t bother me.

It’s phat to be fit

Nous allons traiter des différentes habitudes alimentaires en France et en Grande-Bretagne.De plus en plus de personnes rencontrent des problèmes cardio-vasculaires et de plus en plus d'enfants connaissent l'obésité. Nous, on a décidé de vous faire part de quelques petits conseils, alors soyez sympa, suivez-les !

Obésité : l’ado en danger
A real threat to young people. 10% of children are obese.
On dit que les jeunes qui sont obèses risquent de vivre moins longtemps que leurs parents. There is a link between the increase in obesity and the number of hours spent watching TV.
Les styles de vie actuels réduisent l’activité physique.

When you watch television and focus on snack adverts, don’t always believe what they tell you. “100% fruit”, “Sugar free”. It’s not always true!
A lot of today’s technology does our work for us. So instead of shopping from home via the internet or driving to the shops, just try to walk to and from the supermarket. Instead of socialising  with the family in the pub you can plan a bike ride or go on an adventure holiday.
We have also taken up the habit of eating snacks such as chocolate and crisps so instead we could have fruit or a cereal bar to lead a more healthy lifestyle.

Vive la cantine !
Cyril Lignac et le docteur Jean-Michel Cohen vont dans les collèges scolaires pour apporter une alimentation saine. Ce qui les a choqués, c’est qu’ils se sont aperçus que les adolescents ne reconnaissaient pas les légumes et ne distinguaient pas les saveurs. Ces deux hommes sont conscients des dégâts de l’obésité et veulent améliorer les repas des ados.

Jamie’s school dinner
As you know, Jamie Oliver is running a campaign to encourage young people to eat healthier because our eating habits have become a risk to our population. Tony Blair is backing this campaign and has promised £280 million for proper ingredients,equipment and training. 
Jamie started this campaign because kids were eating piles of processed junk food and dodged the fresh vegetables. This terrible diet has led to soaring rates of obesity and hugely increased the risks of heart disease and other life threatening conditions. So we are backing up Jamie’s plans to make the children healthier.

Pour notre menu du dimanche, on a fait l’analyse. Comme vous voyez, il y a des éléments sains et malsains chez nous deux.

Need to relax or have fun ?

When we come back from school we need to relax in order to calm down.
A school day is very tiring and stressful. Sometimes we get bad marks,
so we feel bad when we go home, that’s why it’s nice to listen to music to rest. At weekends, we need to unwind, so we listen to music that you can dance to.

Music to relax
Pour se détendre, on écoute des chansons plus romantiques qui nous permettent de nous évader comme celles de Ne-yo. Nous aimons ses chansons car elles parlent d’amour ce qui nous permet de rêver. Elles ont également un rythme entraînant grâce auquel on arrive à oublier nos petits soucis et le stress de la journée.

Sa musique est intéressante et bien que l’on retrouve le même rythme dans chaque chanson, elles ont toutes une particularité qui les rend originales.

De la musique pour se défouler
When we need to unwind we listen to Rap music, and in France we like listening to Diam’s.
Diam's was born in Cyprus and when her father abandonned his family she moved to the suburbs of Paris with her mother. That's why she writes songs against racism. She also tries to fight against violence in the suburbs.

More recently, in the video clip of the song "jeune demoiselle", she tries to fight against the idea that women are often seen as "objects"

Comment les Français et les Anglais passent-ils les après-midi, en été ? Ils bronzent ? Oui. Ils mangent trop ? Bien sûr. Mais aussi ils pratiquent deux sports très différents. Comment y joue-t’on ? Nous allons vous l’expliquer…
How do the French and English spend their Sunday afternoons in summer? Do they sunbathe? Yes. Do they eat too much? Of course! But they also play two very different sports. However, how do you play them? We will explain…

Les règles du cricket
Il y a 11 joueurs sur le terrain et 2 autres joueurs sur la piste. Le but du jeu est d’avoir ou de gagner le plus de points possible. Une équipe va sur le terrain et les 2 autres joueurs de l’équipe adverse sur le centre du terrain (la piste). Le 1er joueur lance la balle pendant que l’autre essaye de la renvoyer le plus loin possible. Les points sont déterminés par rapport à la position de la balle. Si elle sort du stade (6 pts), si elle sort du terrain en rebondissant (4 pts) mais si elle ne sort pas (0 pt) le lanceur doit faire un aller-retour (2 pts), mais s’il ne fait qu’un aller ce sera (1 pt).

The rules of pétanque
There are 2 or 4 players they each have got 4 boules and they have one jack (jack, a small ball made of wood which the players aim at). The players take it in turns to throw their boules at the jack. At the end the points go to the player who’s boule(s) are closest to the jack after everyone has thrown all their boules. 1 point is scored for each ball closest to the jack. A good tactic in the game is to knock opponents’ boules out of the way.

Les jeux vidéos peuvent tuer

La santé : passer une nuit blanche sur l’ordinateur nous empêche d’avoir l’esprit clair le lendemain. Un trop grand manque de sommeil nuit à notre santé.

La sécurité : on peut devenir accro aux jeux vidéo et confondre la réalité avec le monde virtuel. Certaines personnes conduisent sur la route comme pendant une course de voitures sur console, pourtant, comme le dit la pub de la sécurité routière : « La route n’est pas un jeu, t’as qu’une vie » !

L’esprit critique : celui qui joue se sent invincible. Tout lui est possible : s’il meurt pendant une partie, il est toujours vivant à la partie suivante. Tout lui est permis : tuer les gens, bombarder les villes, incendier les maisons, voler, écraser les passants dans la rue. Les jeux nous font faire des choses que nous ne devrions jamais faire.

La relation aux autres : certains deviennent agressifs à force d’avoir les mêmes réflexes que dans les jeux. Trop de temps passé sur l’ordinateur empêche la vie de famille. D’autres s’isolent, s’enferment dans leur chambre, et coupent tout contact avec le monde extérieur.

La liberté : pour certains, cela devient une véritable drogue ! Comme pour les paquets de cigarettes, on pourrait écrire sur les jeux vidéo : - jouer peut tuer. Ou : jouer peut nuire gravement à votre santé et à celle de votre entourage, donc c’est comme pour l’alcool… à consommer avec modération.

Mum and Dad, please buy me a…

Laptop… It will help with my learning. It will help with my school work such as projects and essays. I will be able to do faster research and I can save vital information onto disc or print it off. I can also email my friends all over the world.

Phone… It is a link with the whole world at the push of a button. You will always know where I am and what is happening, and so I will feel safe. And if I phone a French friend, it will help me improve my language  skills. I will be able to contact my friends very easily, and so I will never feel lonely.

Ipod… You know I sometimes need to relax. I can listen to all kinds of cool tunes any time, wherever I am. I will always have my music with me. An ipod is a lot smaller and more fashionable than a CD player, and it can also  hold 10 times as many songs, so it is very convenient.

You see, they are really necessary !
Of course I did not tell you everything…

I am often tempted by playing games or listening to music instead of doing my homework… And I spend so much time texting and ringing my mates, hopefully you won’t know how much it will cost. Wink wink.

Azincourt

Azincourt : 25 octobre 1415, histoire de la bataille
Oyez, Oyez, braves gens, ce qui advint entre nos deux pays en l’an 1415

Cet épisode situé au coeur de la Guerre de Cent Ans, opposa la France et l’Angleterre…
Le 25 octobre les deux armées se rencontrent entre Azincourt et Tramécourt. Les pertes seront énormes du côté français, près de 10 000 hommes tués contre 1 600 du côté anglais.
Elles font d’Azincourt l’une des batailles les plus meurtrières du Moyen âge occidental.
During the Hundred Year War, this episode opposed France and England. On 25th October the two armies met between Azincourt and Tramécourt.
The French side suffered huge losses, almost 10.000 men as opposed to 1.600 on the English side. This makes Azincourt one of the bloodiest battles of the Middle Ages in Occident.

Rencontre - Meeting

Nous sommes arrivés au centre anglais d’Hardelot le lundi 16 octobre pour réaliser le journal / blog 1, 2, 3… Yes ! pendant une semaine. 12 élèves anglais de 4e sont venus de l’école de Swadelands et 12 élèves français venus de 4 collèges différents (les collèges d’Heuchin, de Calonne-Ricouart, de Beaurainville et de Bapaume). Nous vous avons préparé un cocktail vitaminé de rubriques toujours à la pointe de l’actu. Savez-vous comment vivent vos amis d’outre-Manche ?
Avez-vous envie de goûter aux saveurs anglaises ? Connaissez-vous les dernières avancées technologiques ? Avez-vous déjà regardé un match de cricket ? Et les nouveautés musicales ? Si vous voulez en savoir plus dévorez notre journal. Mais l’expérience K-62 ne s’arrête pas à la réalisation. Grâce à ce journal bilingue nous nous sommes fait des amis anglais, nous avons approfondi nos connaissances en langue tout en nous amusant. Prenez autant de plaisir à le lire que nous en avons eu à le réaliser.

We’ve enjoyed the experience because it has helped our French and we’ve made some new friends. It’s been fun to make the newspaper / blog.
We’ve learnt a lot about the techniques you need and to make it fun and exciting. We did all of  this in the Hardelot Centre in Pas de Calais. We have come a long way from Swadelands School in Kent in a mini bus and it was worth it!
We started our week by tasting French sweets and snacks while playing games. The next day we went to the beach, both the French and English students played football. That night we went bowling in Boulogne and had mixed  teams which was also really fun and we had a good laugh. The following day we worked on our magazine layout and took a break to visit the local beach to take our photos  for our front page cover. After we finished our layout we visited the Nausicaa sea-life Centre, followed by shopping in Boulogne. Over all it was a fantastic week and we all really enjoyed ourselves.
